Hard to know where to start - but for me the worst thing about today was the
crowd ! All those fans who were staying away due to a hatred of Wise where were
they ? All the McAllister fans, where were they ? Yes 24K is a huge crowd in
this Division but not for us ! Not when we are still in play off spot (going in
to the game), not when we have a new manager, not when we have a returning hero
on the pitch (Lubo) and two other new players, one of which is a striker with a
brilliant goals to games ratio, not when it is a Saturday 3pm Cat B game !!
To make matters worse those that did turn out decided that they would be
spectators and not supporters - sitting \ standing there quiet as mice and not
giving the team any real backing.
Then to cap it all leaving in droves after the second goal and then lots of
booing of the players at the end.
Not a day the fans can be proud of !!
So to the game itself - if this had been a pre-season match where the players
get to know each other and how they play I think we would all be focusing on
the good points - but this is not pre-season but mid-season and we were up
against a team who have played 20 odd games together and it showed.
We on the other hand were basically a team of strangers with only Heath,
Prutton, Hughes and Beckford having played together really, and Heath has not
played for a fair few games. The back 5 have never played together with
Kenton(as a right back), Sheehan and Lubo in effect having debuts. Howson and
Hughes have played one game as a centre pairing I think and Johnson was making
his debut as a left winger. Up front we had another new pairing.
We were without Capser and Rui at the back and Kilkenny in midfield both of
whom would have helped the cause. At times we looked Ok and individual players
did individual things Ok but we were not a team and this led to various mix ups
and misunderstandings which can be blamed on both goals we conceded.
At least Macca has got a week to look at the players at his disposal and to
try and sort out how they will play and which players will compliment each
other.
It is not all doom and gloom but we need to settle quickly before our slip
down the league becomes a real tumble. We have good players at this level and
need to get it all sorted. But to go back to my first point, when the team
needed the fans to back them to the hilt and show patience the fans were sadly
lacking.
A good win on Saturday at Northampton, a team who were absolute rubbish at ER
a few weeks ago and things will look very different.

  Dave
