I was mulling this over in the car this morning. Now, personally I have a
great deal of sympathy in many respects for the Man Utd community over
this, BUT (And it's a big but) the problem with the Munich crash is that
it is the cornerstone of a lot of what Man Utd are today.
Now I did a lot of "Munich Munich '58" singing in my teens, not
particularly proud of it now but I didn't know any better at the time.
Reading independent reports on the quality of some of the players involved
and appreciating that Bill Shankly was, infact, talking complete bollocks
when he said "Football isn't a matter of life and death, it's far more
important than that", maybe I even (whisper it) matured a bit and realised
football and death aren't the comfiest of bedfellows, I moved on. But Man
Utd (And Liverpool fans) use their disasters to their benefit in many
respects.
Look at the behaviour of Man Utd fans when the Don died. No respect
whatsoever given and as a result? Well, surprise surprise the Matt Busby
minutes silence at Blackburn is poorly received in retaliation. BUT. This
gets national condemnation, we are vilified for our "appalling lack of
respect" for a manager who survived a tragedy and went on to build a
European cup winning team etc. etc. Not a word uttered about their
behaviour for the Don's death, oh no because the media have now decided we
are dirty Leeds and that's that, bar the very good piece in The Guardian a
while back which showed the Don to be light years ahead of his time with
regards preparation, we're dirty Leeds and everything we do is nasty,
they are the poor souls who have never done anything wrong ever and even
if they have we'll forgive them because of Munich.
It was a very sad event and I fully respect Manchester United's need to
commemorate THEIR tragedy, but I do not think there should have been a
minutes silence at the England game last night. I do not think YORKSHIRE
Televisions Soccer Night should have had a 3 minute eulogy for Munich.
This nationalisation of Man Utd is what (I think) most people detest. I,
childish though it may be, ALWAYS ask "Who?" when anyone says "Did you
watch the United game last night" and point out that there are 13 other
Uniteds in Professional football in England. This whole "United" psyche is
built on the cornerstone of sympathy for Munich and Is central to what is
wrong with Man Utd (And Liverpool).
