Hmmm, a simplistic thought from a simplistic brain, then again I don't
believe that the thought was all his own work, but no he hasn't thought
about it thoroughly enough.
Given that racist abuse is a criminal offence and that the fans represent
the reputation of the football club it could be fair to argue that it is the
clubs responsibility to make sure that the fans behave whilst in the
confines of stadia.
However, there are ways and means of dispensing justice on criminal activity
and this is through the court system.
Whilst racism is an abhorrent crime there are others out there that are just
as bad if not worse. Not only should these other crimes be put up for
consideration but also the position of the criminal in terms of who they
represent and how it brings football into disrepute.
Consider the following as an example of the above.
A footballer drink drives, falls asleep and subsequently kills 2 kids, a
football supporter driving home from a match in a club shirt does the same
thing. Whilst both are the same crime only one of them damages the
reputation of the club / football in general.
Therefore, why not consider a points deduction or sanction system based on
the habits of those that are an employee of a football club.
Far more damage is caused to the reputation of football by footballers than
by some of the idiots that 'support' them.
Whilst I sympathise with ferdinand for being a victim of crime I don't think
that he is right.

I forgot to post this in the post losing depression phase..
Did anyone else hear a snippet on the news last night about our
erstwhile captain, Rio Duckface, complaining about racist abuse at games
- quite right too, it is outrageous and punitive action should indeed be
meted out to those who indulge in such abuse.
However.....he made the comment below, and I can't help feeling that he
hasn't fully thought things through..
"If things like this keep happening you have to take points off them.
Then the punters will realise the team is going to be punished."
Let me give you a scenario.....
Your team is one place off Promotion/relegation/champions league place
with no chance of making it in the one game left in the season, no
matter what the outcome of the games.
Do you think it possible that some fans of the club concerned might
consider buying club shirts of the team they could replace and going to
this "last" game and racially abusing everyone on the field who is of a
differing race?
Result? The "offending" team gets a point deduction - the abusers get
fined at the most and return home the conquering hero's (to those whom
they let in on the secret)
I think it highly possible if something the fans control can cost a
rival team points, then someone somewhere will do it.
I can't argue with Duckface's sentiment, but I can with his suggestion
for a punishment.
Thoughts?
Steve
