I've been getting regular texts from Charlie, my younger son - who, as we
have been reminiscing, might be remembered as an eight year old from one of
the Lards headshaves sessions in Nottingham around 15 years ago (?)

He is in Cape Town and reports that there was a rousing Marching On Together
at the test match when the Man Ure result became known.... wearing his Leeds
shirt with Radebe across the back seemed to tick all the boxes.

Yesterday he had afternoon tea at the Lord Nelson Hotel ... and at the next
table were Mr and Mrs Bates ..... they were very happy to have a chat that
went on last for fifteen minutes and seemed pleasant enough. Bates was less
than complimentary about the attitude of both Beckford and his agent (the
actual expression used was more colourful !!) .... Apparently we have been
in for Eidur Gudjohnsen but he wasn't prepared to take a cut. This might
make you think about the style of any replacement as someone has already
suggested a Freedman type who doesn't play off the shoulder and has two good
feet and the ability to bring others in with link up play. However perhaps
it also shows Grayson's ambition if he is suggesting Gudjohnsen.

Bates was also extremely positive about Grayson and was keen to give the
impression that he supported him all the way.

Bates advice to Charlie was not to spend too much on the holiday and save it
to spend on supporting Leeds .... I suppose that spending it on Leeds is
what pays for Bates spell in Cape Town !!

The conversation finished with Bates suggesting that fish and chips in the
Radebe Suite (our usual haunt on the visits to ER from Greenwich) were
better than the fare at the Lord Nelson Hotel.
