Great post Thirkers.

I am also one who lived through those agonies, and can recall such desperate
disappointment as the 1970 quadruple collapsing to nothing.

However, with respect, I think there was one crucial difference between those
crushing blows and the current disasters: in those days, there was always the
consolation that "well, there's always next season", when we knew we would be
back again and surely our luck would finally change. This season, if we don't
make it up, there is the horrible thought behind everything that permanent Div
3 status may be awaiting. Beckford will go, followed by who
knows..............Snodgrass, Howson ? Crowds will dwindle. Recruitment of
good replacements will be impossible. Etc etc. We all repeat over and over the
mantra that WE KNOW THAT ONE DAY WE WILL GET BACK TO WHERE WE BELONG, but I
think we all fear that actually we may not. Ever.

The only similar feeling from the Good Old Days was after the 75 EC Final when
we knew the great old team was breaking up and we had just blown our one and
only chance to get our name on the top honours list..............plus we were
facing a ban from European football.

I thought this the other day when Dr. Loopy mentioned how hard it is to support
Arsenal. It is a totally different order of disappointment for all those
fairweather fans who support the Big 4 (OK......3). Whatever happens, they are
still going to have another season of visits from the likes of Barcelona or
Inter etc.
