What we don't know is whether or not the previous offer was a fantastic one, or if the club is just positioning itself for further negotiation or indeed if Everton/Newcastle or others have withdrawn their offer to buy, based on what they have seen in some games/credit crisis etc etc. Maybe the captaincy on the last day was a shrewd move too. No one doubts that he hasn't been absolutely crucial in getting us promotion, but is he premiership standard? My guess is if he goes, he'll be a David Bentley Mk 2 warming the bench every week.
