The NATIONAL CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN MENTAL HEALTH is seeking to
establish within Melbourne, in the next 12 months an after hours crisis
service called COMPASSION.

This service will provide FREE support, counselling, advocacy and legal
and medical assistance to people in crisis. A safe place where people
can go and be able to speak to someone who will treat them with dignity
and care and help them through their crisis.

The reason we are setting up this service is because there is a
tremendous need for it, as there is really nowhere in Victoria that a
person in crisis can go to at night . Evenings and weekends are often
when people are most in crisis, yet also most unable to get any face to
face support and help. For example, one of the reasons we have so many
young people killing themselves is when they are suicidal and need help
there is usually no one who they can speak to in person at night.

This service will help people get real care and support, rather than end
up in a psychiatric hospital just because they are in crisis. It will
be a place where everyone is welcomed, from someone who is suicidal to a
woman trying to escape domestic violence to a young person who needs
someone to help them find a safe place for the night.

The crisis service will operate between the hours of 8pm to 4 am, 7
nights a week.

To be able to offer such a service we obviously need lots of people who
would be willing to give up some time for free as this service will not
be government funded. What we need are people who are willing to
volunteer even a couple of hours a week or fortnight.

We need:

Social Workers
Doctors
Lawyers
Nurses
Counsellors
Interpreters
Youth Workers
Community Development Workers
Psychologists
Welfare Workers
Physical Therapists

and any other person who is committed and dedicated to helping people
and would like to be involved in setting up this service and help run
it.

Help make a difference and be part of something that is truly one of a
kind.
