The Viruses are still here. There's another awful outbreak in Africa. In
Australia, bats still carry around that Morbillivirus, now called Hendra.
It killed another horse in Cairns early this year.
Then there's Malaysia. More than 100 people dead. And that virus - Nipah
- is closely related to the one here.

PRODUCER's SUPPLEMENT:
Five years have passed since the death in Queensland of trainer Vic Rail
and many of his thoroughbred horses. The viral culprit, now called Hendra,
was considered sufficiently lethal to be classified as a Level 4 Biohazard.
Periodic outbreaks of deadly infectious diseases like Ebola and Marburg
continue to claim both human and animal victims, some in distant countries
and some closer to home.
Earlier this year, a viral relative of Hendra called Nipah killed over 100
people and tens of thousands of pigs in Malaysia. Authorities there
imposed strict control and isolation protocols, including a ban on the
movement of horses.
What have we done in Australia - and is it enough - to assure that our
horses and people are safe from future outbreaks?
