Fretilin has received information via Portugal that Fretilin leader Ma
Hodu, a member of the CNRT and the Security Commission established under UN
auspices was arrested following his meeting last Sunday at the Dili airport
with Gen Wiranto and Foreign Minister Alatas. He had previously been
working continuously with the Indonesian administration on security
matters, so the timing of his arrest is no accident.

Ma Hodu addressed the ACTU Executive in March and spoke in the Bourke St
Mall at the ACTU rally with Jennie George and Bishop Hilton Deakin.

He is reported to be in Kupang. His family was evacuated from his house
before it was burned on Monday. Their whereabouts are unknown, but
possibly in the East of the country.

I attended Ma Hodu's son's 11th birthday at his humble bamboo and
galvanised iron house with Dr Kevin Baker three weeks ago. Kevin operated
on his son at Liverpool hospital for a minor condition last year. His wife
and his mother were at the party. His mother was recalling the Australian
commandos in the 1940s and showed the fighting spirit that she has passed
on to her son.

During our recent visit Jane Nicholls and I on behalf of the ACTU were
basically living in his office, or was he using our room as an office? It
was hard to tell. Calls to the phone at that house are unanswered.
