3CR and the CFMEU organise Radiothon for East Timor
Sunday September 12th, 1999
9am - 12midday 9419 8377

In response to the desperate situation in East Timor, 3CR Community Radio
will run a Radiothon on this coming Sunday, September 12th. Money raised
will go to the National Council for Timorese Resistance (CNRT) and their
struggle for freedom and independence.

Since its beginning in 1976, 3CR has reported on the invasion of East Timor
and the slaughter of over one third of the population by the Indonesian
military. More recently in the weeks leading up to Monday's referendum, 3CR
has covered the horror of the killing, torturing and intimidation of East
Timorese people by the Indonesian-backed militia.

On Monday, results of the referendum showed that the East Timorese people
had voted overwhelming for Independence - since then 3CR has prioritised
news from East Timor. 3CR keeps in close contact with both the East
Timorese community here in Melbourne and those now arriving in Australia
having fled their homeland.

>From 9am on Sunday morning 3CR programming will feature stories, news and
analysis of the situation in East Timor. The CFMEU's weekly show, The
Concrete Gang, will look at the union movement's response and role to the
crisis in East Timor from 9:30 to 10:30am. Listeners will be called upon to
pledge financial support to assist with the struggle for East Timorese
independence.

The 3CR community is distressed and outraged at the merciless and
preventable violence against the East Timorese people. 3CR's actions
recognise the urgency of the situation on the ground in East Timor, and
directly respond to the shameful inaction of the Australian Government.
