Expected to be the first President of an independent East Timor, Mr.
Gusmao has been hailed as the "Mandela of South East Asia" because of
his resilience and moral authority as the leader of the East Timorese
liberation movement. Mr. Gusmao was captured by the Indonesian military
in 1992, and sentenced to twenty years in prison for his role in
combatting the illegal Indonesian occupation . Mr.Gusmao was released in

mid-September, and has since met with world leaders to discuss the
reconstruction of East Timor in the wake of the destruction wrought by
Indonesian military forces.
