Southern Cross is the operator of the Honeymoon Uranium mine planned for
northern South Australia. Honeymoon is an in-situ leach mine (ISL). ISL
involves the pumping of sulfuric acid through the orebody to dissolve the
uranium underground. It is then pumped to the surface for reprocessing. The
process of ISL can lead to permanent contamination of groundwater, which is
used by local communities and industries for drinking water supplies, and
can also contaminate land which was otherwise good agriculturally
productive land.
