TWO FORTHCOMING CONFERENCES
in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Adelaide University

Nation/States December 13-16 2001
In a year in which Australia invested heavily in memorialising the history
of its own nationhood, and in which Australia's relations to indigenous
peoples and immigration have continued to be crucial issues of debate, it
seems timely to think about the history and current form of Nation-States
in Australia.

Papers are particularly welcome on the following topics:
Immigration and borders: national culture? : theorising the state :
sovereignty : state histories : diasporas : rights : federation - a
retrospective.

Keynote Speakers
* Professor Frederic Jameson (Duke University)
* Professor Rey Chow (Brown University)
* Professor Simon During (University of Melbourne

The Centenary of Federation: a retrospective (15 December) The Centenary of
Federation was widely celebrated throughout Australia in 2001. In this
retrospective on the centenary year the convenors of the Nation/States
conference invite papers which explore the material and symbolic aspects of
those celebrations.

In light of the wider conference themes exploring the imagined community of
the nation, this session hopes to consider not only the significance of the
Centenary year, but also the lasting and evolving effects of the federal
system and the Australian constitution, as well as questions of public
belonging.

While the emphasis is on retrospection, approaches which examine the
trajectory of federation and the centenary events, or approaches which
forecast/imagine alternative trajectories are welcome.

Speakers and panels will consider media coverage, gallery and museum
memorialisations, indigenous roles in relation to the centenary,
educational programs and public works, and the political commitments
invested in the centenary. Confirmed speakers include:

* Phillip Adams (cultural critic, writer and radio presenter)
* Dr Paul Carter (Australian Centre, University of Melbourne)
* Dr Helen Irving (1901 Centre, UTS, & Law, University of Sydney)
* Associate Professor Ken Gelder (University of Melbourne)
* Lester Irabinna-Rigney (Flinders University)
* Paul Kelly (author and International Editor of The Australian)
* Professor Joan Kerr (Centre for Cross-cultural Research, ANU)
* Professor Stuart Macintyre (University of Melbourne)
* Dr Fiona Nicoll (Institute for Cultural Research, UWS & UTS

Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference November 16-17 2001

'In Conversation'

CALL FOR PAPERS

Keynote Speaker: Elspeth Probyn
Associate Professor, Department of Gender Studies, University of Sydney

$500 prize for best conference paper from the Dean, Humanities and
Social Sciences

'In Conversation'
We are calling for abstracts (250 words) that address the meaning or
application of this mode of exchange. Inherent in conversation is
possibility. It is an open-ended discourse, a dialogical meeting
occurring on landscapes that can be rough and at times unreconciled.

Conversations allow differences and different voices. They are
unpredictable and performative. Conversations can be understood as the
relations between theory and practice, performance and audience, past
and present. Consequently, questions are raised, such as: Is there a
dialogue between structure and space? Can the conversation be an
intervention, or a means of reconciliation? Are there ethical or
political implications for it as a model?

We are approaching the conversation as a potential mode of interaction
between and within different disciplines and forums, and are asking if
it is a viable and productive means of conceptualising the work of the
academy, beyond the academy. Is there a future for this kind of
conversation (if indeed it is a conversation)?

Expressions of interest are invited from disciplines within such
faculties as the Humanities and Social Sciences, Visual and Performing
Arts, Geographical and Environmental Sciences, Architecture and Law.

Abstracts due by 21 September 2001
