Hi Bob
its called a split turning.
The trick of it is, Its so simple I cant believe its not use more in furniture. ;-)

You take four square blocks and then (this method very.I'm sure many people will write in other ways, there are lots of them.) I use a paper joint. ( grocery paper bags work very well.) You glue the wood together with a piece of paper in between each piece of wood. Once the glue dries you turn the wood as normal. once turned and sanded, you can take a sharp chisel and hit the paper joint and the wood will separate. sand the paper off and then you can use the corner piece in any way you choose. (Screw pockets work well, as dose sliding dove tails.) On the church table I used (the dark one with the flutes) I used 4"X4" pine posts, and on the portable alter I used Plywood. The type of wood dose not matter with this joint. Its very easy to do, four corners cut at one time... It's so EASY that Even I can do it.!!! ;-)
Good luck on your work.
AND
Have a great day.
C.A.G.

Curt,
I really like how you incorporated the turnings into the kitchen
benches. It serves as a very practical and pretty way of making a
sharp corner into something more safe and very attractive. That is
what I try to do is to make something look good but to be very
functional in the process. These rules discussed help you determine
what will make something pleasing to the eye as well as functional.
