1. Torque will not change with the speed since the gearing is creating the
power - on a geared motor that is. On a DC motor with variable speed you will
see a drop in torque as the speed is reduced.

2. Correct to some degree. To slow and you will end up burning the wood and
dulling the tool. Too fast and you put the burden on the motor in the tool and
can end up with poor results. Your goal is to find the right speed. Of course
that speed is also affected by the types of wood in use. Feed speed will rise
or fall depending on the density of the wood, power of the tool and sharpness
of the cutting tool.

  1. If I set controller to run gear motor half (1/4, 1/8...) max speed, how
torque will change? Same half f (1/4, 1/8...) or not?

  2. Tim wrote "The added speed over Legacy's specified motor helps with a
cleaner cut."

When I do something on table saw, router table and other power tools I see
another results.

Fast feed - rough cut, low feed - clean cut. I think same rools work on
Legacy Mill .

    Guilty as charged.
    I am a proud owner of a re-build 510/ 520, which I've been using since
1995, The SS and Legacy are my two work horses in my shop. and I've integrated
both machines, meaning, I can take form one machine and use the same parts on
both machines, It makes life much easer, From the Legacy to the SS and back,
depending on the job. I have a Legacy drive hub adaptor, that I made for my SS
so I can do a change over very quickly. Good Tools. ;-)
    Thanks Mac.
    Have a good night.

Aa haa! Another Shopsmith owner!! (look in background of last photo -
there's a SS Speed Chart!)

Very nice photos of your setup Curt. Thanks for sharing.

        Hello and Good morning Arkady
These are DC motors right? low speed is what you need for the X axis
movement (carriage movement.), If you use that 92 prm motor with a speed
control on it, I would think that your working/cutting speeds should be
something like 0- 40 rpm max.( perhaps a little higher, depending on what type
of cut you are making.) The crank handle or acme screw is 4 turns per inch, It
dose not need to turn fast in order to move, slow and controllable speed is
with you need.
Now if you are looking for the spindle drive motor, (turning the drive
spindle with the motor the higher speed is needed.) higher speeds are what you
want for that.
Here are my two motors, and limmit switch that Ive made.

          Hi all.
Which one do you recomend for Axis X and Axis A Drive Motor Dayton
4Z128B or 4Z381A?
          4Z128B 1/8 HP. 11:1 Gear-box ratio. 167 RPM Final output speed. 43
Inch-pounds torque.
          4Z381A 1/8 HP. ? Gear-box ratio. 92RPM Final output speed. 77
Inch-pounds torque.
What is more impotant for each axis? High speed and low torque or low
speed and high torque?
          Thanks.
          Arkady.
