Hi Curt,
Very familiar with the pipe fitting trade, worked for 7 years as a union carpenter then 19 years as a union electrician working on schools, hospitals, industrial plants and nuclear power house until I hurt my back and was forced out of the building trades reinventing the wheel 21 years ago becoming a self employed Fire Underwriter Inspector and shortly after adding home inspections. Only met one other person that had a Legacy mill in all my years of travel and woodworking/woodturning club activities but he passed away 5 years ago so there’s been no incentive to use the LOM or opportunity to compare notes with anyone until I found this group. Hope the pipefitting trade has good benefits; the golden years are not golden unless you’ve got teachers, firefighters, or policeman’s golden parachute retirement package (at least hear here in NY ). Have a Rotarian friend who is a retired principal (retired at 55) who gets 100% medical coverage with no premium and has 3 houses NY, Florida and Idaho and a private plane so he can fly back and forth between them. Im sorry to hear that you do not have a motor, I highly recommend two motors for the Legacy, one for the carriage and the second one for the spindle/ head stock. (sadly Legacy over priced there motors and drive systems, and did not stress there inporants enough years ago.) I personally went the cheap route, (which wasn't cheap.but I did skimp to get what I thought I needed, then. but today Im sorry I did not buy all that I could afford at the time.) But that nether here or there Now, I have made for my self most everything what I need to make the Legacy work like it should, and believe me when I say that the Legacy can do So much more than just ropes and barley twists. ;-) Micheal I wish you luck and quick recovery. Please keep in touch. C.A.G. _____ Hello Curt, Thank you so much for your kind words, if the surgery goes well it won’t matter much what the bills are it’s all about quality of life in the golden years and not being a burden on society. No motor drive on the 1200 but hopeful after a couple of months of recovery and finally fully retired I’ll be able to crank out all sorts of rope and barley twisted balusters, speaking of which didn’t know there less expensive substitutes for Magnate rope and barley twists bits. What do you do at the hospital? You have a great day/evening, you already made mine great. Michael P. I hate what LIFE gets in the way of what I want to do. I hope that after all is said and done, everything works out for you. If you have a motor drive on your 1200 at least you will still be able to turn some, on and with the Legacy. One question for you "Expensive Magnate router bits"??? I find that Magnate bit are cheaper than most router bits that I have found around my place. ) But that's not what I wanted to talk about at this time.) Almost any router bit can be used on the Legacy, you dont need Magnite, or even a plunging bit to make the Legacy work. bearing bits (edge type of bits) will still work on the Legacy and if you realy want, you can modifie your bits and grind down the bearing nub and make it into a plunging bit, Even those cheap HHS bit you can find at any hardware store can be modified to work if need be... (ake. Mike Pung's fluting bit comes to mind.)(Check out the archives.) and even those Dremal (small) bits can be use if need be. I have found things like diamond hole saws to work well on the Legacy as well as a biskit cutting, blade has worked very well for me in the past. Its sorta off the topic, but still in the mind set of this message. The Old Ornamental lathe guys of the 1800's found different ways to cut wood on there machines. I dont see why, with a little thought we should be able to do what some "OLD" Dude's could have done some 200 years ago. I mean its much easer to get and find parts to make things today... ;-) You just need to think out side the box. so to speak... ;-)C.A.G. WOOPS! THE Hospital just called... It looks like Im back off to work again. Have a great day. C.A.G. _____ I for one find the group very informative and educational; my problem is that I don’t currently use my Legacy 1200 simply because I don’t have room for it in my undersize shop but I am a regular woodturner belonging to several woodturning clubs selling and exhibiting many of my pieces. I’m being forced into retirement soon after undergoing very expensive back surgery that will leave me deeply in debt with medical bills unable to afford those expensive Magnate router bits necessary to use the LOM. This group is growing beyond stale and I don't think it's time to close the group yet. I don't believe that we have seen %90 of the capabilities of our ornamental mills. We have over 50 new mill owners that have never asked a question. Have we posted all there is to learn? I want to thank Brandon Khoury for his recent article on using googles sketch-up to design parts. He asked if anyone has used this technique and from my point of view only heard crickets. I use a similar method in cad and have an ancient computer so I was not able to try out his method, but I can tell it's a good one. It's topics like Brandon that make this group still worth while. He shared his knowledge and took his own time to add to the group. This is more of what we need. To wrap this up, I think we are in a critical stage where it's time to decide the future of the group. We need to grow or possibly close up. -Tim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group.
