That is the motor I'm thinking about. The stock pulley was not going to work
for the suppliers I normally use if I recall. I could have machined something
for the spindle end, but I really don't know why this was a deal breaker. I
might have been trying to source a timing belt option that was affordable. If
memory served me right, that to ended...I seriously don't remember. So much
for Yoda!

PS, International owners must have some other resource, this kit is from China.
There are Australian and UK made lathes, what do they use for dc motors?

I assume you mean this

 https://www.pennstateind.com/store/TCLVSKIT.html

and by modifying do you mean with different pulleys

This topic should have been changed.

As another motor choice for the spindle motor that is off the shelf and easily
available is a dc motor designed for lathe motor replacement from Penn State
Industries. It can be modified to go slower than it is originally setup for.
The shaft is a metric size which might hinder finding a suitable pulley here in
the USA.

See my new post regarding Delrin bushings for a response to Bill.

The legacy motor is a Dayton model 4Z131B

1/20 HP 90V 109RPM

On the spindle legacy didn’t do a motor accept the woodchuck i don’t have any
specks for that one

But I like a dc motor no weaker than 1/20 HP which can run around 0-200rpm, but
I would not recommend too fast a motor

If your headstock spindle has delrin bushes you need a ball bearing headstock
for this, I would keep my revs to around the 100 RPM or less for delrin always
better to upgrade to ball bearings delrin wears too quick with the weight of
larger work.

Oh and the reason for a DC instead of an AC motor with a speed control added
you don’t loose grunt when you turn the speed control down slow.

Hello
The motors.

The lead screw drive is a 90 volt DC gear motor. speed 0-60 rpm but for most
cut I run the speed slow (10- 30 rpm?) I have an 82;1 gear ratio, with a
500lbs lift. My motor is a bit of an over kill, but I got it as a part of a
horse trade a few years back... the transph... is a KB electronics for E-bay.
;-) So I did mine on the cheap.

By the way I'm glad you like the chain, its a timing chain and gears from an
Audi. My motor sits side saddle off form the rails by the use of a door hinge
and bolt to take up the slop in the chain.

The spindle drive motor is an AC motor 0-240rpm, and I have it on a rheostat
the speed that I normally run the machine is something like 80rpm. For sanding
I speed it up a bit... The motor is mounted off of the work bench, and the
belt is gravity only, the pulley is 12" and I made a slot in the shaft to mount
up to the Legacy's drive hub.

I would have a hard time using the Legacy with out the motors today, I feel
its a must. (at least for me.) I only have one stop on my machine, since I only
cut form one direction, (tail to head-stock.) I find I don't really need two.

You do not have to copy what I have to make your Legacy work, but what ever you
use, make sure you can control the speed, slower is better, even for the spindle
drive.

Before I made my motors... I use to think of a Barns lathe TYPE OF MACHINE.
Pedal power. I think with some gears and... a pedal powered Legacy could work
out pretty nice. ;-)

Just an idea!

have a good night.

C.A.G.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the responses, I like the motors, both setups, can you tell me what
size and rpm seem to work best. the chain drive is neat, was thinking maybe
belt just incase it runs into some resistance it would have a little buffering,

Still trying to get it back together, lot of parts still no exactly sure how or
where they go, so studying some of the details, looking for pics of different
setups that show good detail on the setups. Thanks again for the info

suggestions as to the pros and cons of adding the drive s are, I added a 36"
