Markus,
Install a Y-fitting and blast gate on the duct and run a "branch" duct  up to the ceiling - where you leave the end open.  That will somewhat reduce the high suction right at the LOM and the branch duct will draw in the "fines" that make their way higher up in the shop.
At some point, if you need more suction, you can then close the blast gate to get it.

THE Most important thing you can do re: dust control  - and your HEALTH - will be to always wear a respirator w/a cartridge(s) (NOT the $1.99 paper fiber hospital-type mask) whenever running the LOM and other machines generating saw dust.  Keep in mind - it's the smaller/smallest dust particles that are most detrimental to your lungs/health - not the big chips that even a shop vac will pick up.

Not trying to divert the topic, but while I can see how building an enclosure underneath the LOM will help, what about the fines?

The porter cable router that came with my newly acquired pre-owned 1000 has absolutely no dust control.    What is everyone doing for the fine dust?  Sticking a 4 to 6" dust port in the general area and assuming it will suck up most of it?  I have an oneida cyclone, but if I put anything else near the port, it will probably suck it up too.

In the process of putting together my new LOM, I noted a number of references to dust collection and just how many chips these machines develop. I really didnt care for the chip bag skirt supplies with the machine. After hearing of these experiences and watching some videos, I decided to build some side shields that will sit in the outer rail slots. This will cause a good number of the chips to fall straight down where they can be swept up and vacuumed into the collector or shoveled into bags.

Once installed on the LOM I will send finished pictures. My vanity said "paint the parts to match your new machine." I said "Ok."
