Yes I see the thread just appearing down the centre of the rib very clever can
you please post a pic of the T nut you used so I can see what type to buy I
have a mod coming up that I need to stack a couple of rails together similar to
what you did

hey Bill... let me start by saying that I don't have access to my Legacy on a
daily basis... I was forced to downsize my shop due to economics and the legacy
did not warrant a full time place in the new shop due to the little use it
got... it is in a warehouse a bit upstate from where the shop is(110 miles)...
I usually go up to the warehouse every other weekend(26 times a year!...
LOL!)... and I believe you are referring to how I widened my "Z" axis... I
began by cutting some small pieces of Legacy aluminum rail from a Legacy
machine base that was not being used... these were about 3" long... I then used
a "T" nut(McMaster-Carr) with a 10-32 thread that fit snuggly in the "groove"
of the rail and stuck out far enough to also fit into the groove of the other
rail... that was a bit of luck on my part... so basically, the two rails(the
short piece and the originally piece from the "Z" axis) registered and
self-aligned themselves... I then drilled a hole through the "spline of the
Legacy rail to correspond with the location of the "T" nut in the short
piece... doesn't show in the photo, but if you look at the vertical piece of
aluminum rail in the same photo, you can see a bit of the 10-32, socket head
bolt peeking through the center spline of the rail... in fact, I can see 5
drillings in that vertical rail... this was an easy, quick mod that took about
an hour... no special tooling, machining or welding was necessary... and made a
big improvement as to what was happening below with the router... and also gave
me the room to angle the router, when that was needed to do spiral cuts from
the side... at this moment I cannot take better photos to show all of this, but
I hope I have explained it... and when completed, the "Z" axis was rock solid,
no deflection whatsoever... any questions, please ask... Joe B.

hey Tim... the photo posted is of my Legacy... some additional photos are on
the Legacy Facebook page... here is a photo of my "Z" axis without the router
and mounting plate... that is a rotary indexing table which the router mounts
onto... you can set the router to any angle and also 90 degrees to do faceplate
work... this is an early photo, before I modified the "Z" axis... more photos
to follow... Joe

originally started with the cutter at top/center position, but that required a
good amount of sanding... especially when doing a twisted reed... the plunge

so small in diameter, and then that narrow point was divided into two, that
the point was cutting the wood very poorly.. it was practically burning its way
through the cut at the tip of the bit... but cutting from the side with a
different designed bit solved that problem... hence why Magnate came out with
those extra long, side cutting router bits... for straight cutting flutes or
reeds, they are excellent... but for spiral work, it is best to angle the
router to suit the angle of the spiral pitch... especially when using the
reeding bit... this is impossible on a Legacy without some modification of the
router, but the results are much better, in my opinion... the profile of the
bit is exactly what the cut will be when doing it this way... Joe B.

Hello and Good morning.

Nice Video Bill.

Tim I have roped form the side on a few small turnings. the methods are very
much the same as roping on the top. with one BIG difference, the Y axis
controls your depth of cut, when using a template, this is an Awesome method of
turning. (even on a tapper)

As far as stabilizing the turning to stop vibration, The thin stock support
brackets were made to do that, But???

there are other ways to get the job done.

There are a number of factors that all need to be looked at, direction of the
cut, is something that is over looked a lot when cutting. (before we go off
topic to far. I think I will stop with this.) The way you cut on the wood will
effect the quality of what you are making, being it Roping or just turning. Its
something to think about.

talk more latter.

Have a good day.

Ok Guys so I've been doing most everything from top. What advantages are you
seeing doing it from the

side? I'd see needing the same supports but am I wrong? Curt, I'm going to post

soon in a separate post and would like to see if we get some feed back from

me more about milling from the side?

By the way I have an 80/20 rep coming out tomorrow to see what they all have to
offer. lol

Thanks guys.

Bill I too have Tinnitus, as well as High Frequency Nerve damage to my
hearing. (for me the noise NEVER Stops. Just something that I have learned to
live with.)

But with this song, the silence is not... ;-P

Can either of you offer another method on Roping that you like to use?

I have another method that I like to use, that I did not state earlier. but
others in the group may not like this method, mainly due to it uses jigs that I
made my self, that could be a bit tricky to explain and even harder to get
people to make them for them self's.

Sorta like the Wave attachment. Its very cool, And a lot of fun to use, but
most just don't want it. for some reason or another ?

Have a good night.

Hello Everyone.

I started posting this to the group, As a play on words in the title of the
song.(of silence...?)

But after hearing the song (it is NOT the song I remember.) I find myself
strangely moved, to the power of the music.

I was sent an e-mail today asking about roping on the LOM.

I have found a number of different method to work very well for me when roping,
All depending on the size of the spindle you are working with. each method has
it own advantages...

For small ropes (under 12" long.) The best way that I have found is to ,
run/cut the rope on our spindle, to the limit switch,(or stop, if you are
cranking my hand.) then reverse the carriage (by the way of the Acme screw) and
bring it back to the start, then I use my set-up spacers. to advance the
carriage forward, then locking the split nut and re-winding the carriage to the
stop/starting place. to cut again...

Mike Pung's, Crank handle indexing method also works very well for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHgzEKnON-o
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHgzEKnON-o&t=14s> &t=14s

As well as my Sharpie marker method, Used on the wave attachment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWq7eCpLMuc
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWq7eCpLMuc&t=298s> &t=298s

In the Photo's the spade bits that I use for my spacings. And a bone turning,
(8 start, 3" pitch with a 3/8" spacing/spacer.)

Have a good night.
