I bought a woodchuck model IRT-33P on ebay. The manual is useless and there are
no photos. Does anyone in the group have this model and would they be willing
to help me with questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Robert Seliger

They look awesome! I’d be curious as to how to figure the start/pitch/diameter
formula. The manual gives some easy calculations for the rope/barley twist
spirals, and how diameter and starts affects the pit. I’m guessing if you are
using a 1/2” bit, and taking away 1/2” on each side of the material you want to
leave, we’ll say 1/2” for example, that would total 1 1/2”’s and a 3 start
would require the 4.5” pitch gear? So everything is even top and bottom? Or if
you left 1” of material would make it 2”, or the 6” pitch gear for a 3 start……
the Geiger Spiral, really liking the looks of these!

To keep it simple the number of starts increases the pitch by the dia of the
cutter

So a barly or rope single start spiral with a say a 2 inch wide bit

You would have 2inch bit, 2inch pitch , 2 inch dia work

A 2 start you would have a 2inch bit but a 4 inch pitch

A 3 start you would have a 2inch bit but a 6 inch pitch

A 4 start you would have a 2inch bit but a 8 inch pitch

And so on for each start after you finish the first start you disengage the
leadscrew nut and slide the saddle along 2inches and reengage the leadscrew nut
and commence to mill the second start and repeat if you have more starts. The
dia of the work can vary but the relationship between the router bit , the
number of starts and the pitch generally has to stay to maintain a even pitch
without gaps or overlaps.

My triple spiral part 3 video shows this process

I got that , thanks Bill. It’s easier to keep it simple using a shaper type bit
with a certain diameter. So the hollow spiral you drop a 1/2” bit between the 1
1/2” rope twist spirals, ( loosing a 1/4” each side) and leaving 1” of material
making the hollow twist. Just trying to figure this without using a shaper type
bit….. seems the center of the gap usimf a 1/2” straight bit would be
considered the same as the center of the rope twist bit which gets removed in
the hollowing out process. Those Gieger twist pieces look to be 3 start, but
possibly 4. Definitely interesting looking pieces of wood! Thanks, David

Usually you use a strait bit in the bottom of the spiral and hollow spirals are
usually barley router bits

And the strait bit is usually about as wide as bottom part of the spiral this
is opsional there is no set rule

Another way is to do this and join the halves together and mill the spiral then
hollow it

There is some info on both these methods I will see if I can find it later
right now I have to go talk later

Jeff,

Thanks for re-posting.
I'd like to print those pages out as well as store them digitally to my files.
Would you please send them out one more time - with each pic being its own
page.
And make all 4 in the vertical format which will simplify reading the image on
the screen as well as printing it out.
Thanks again.

Ok Dave first thing behind the crank handle there should be one gear not 3,
haveing that in mind you seem to have all 7 pitch gears. you also have the
horizontal vice for doing flat work

Also the vertical vice for doing things like box joints, dovetails and such see
page 100 and 101 in your manual. You also have the template mounting brackets
so you will be able to do template milling work . and you have both left and
right hand gear spindle gears so you will be able to do right and left hand
spirals.
And you have the standard gear set .. what you don’t have is the .25 gear set
And the 2X gear set which are optional extras that we all want. oh and I
also saw a thin stock support in your stuff

The 4 flat square things with a thread in the middle are table nuts and can
only be used one way up your you will pull the insert out. All the other odds
and ends are for different mountings and such you also have 4 index drive hubs
for mounting your work to the mill

Ok that’s about all for now if that’s all the stuff you have with your mill
there is much more you didn’t get with the mill but there is enough to do quite
a variety of work.

Thanks Curt (and everyone else).
I've downloaded the manual now but have only just moved the machine into a shed
and haven't had chance to try to work-out what I have. It would be great if I
could find an original shipping list (I assume there was one... ?)

There are a lot of metal brackets but, at the moment, I have no idea what to do
with them ... I'm sure things will be clearer with time.

Hello again Dave.

I suggest that you play with your Legacy as much as you can before trying to
start a project.

But having said that, Uniformity is the goal. If you are going to do a large
batch of spindles, Do "NOT" make each one and try to make them the same.
instead do the assembly line process, DO ONE Cut on all spindles at one time,
and then move to the second cut and so on...

Also if you plan to make that many spindles you will need one or two motors to
make the job easer. Legacy sold a carriage drive motor. (I hope you have one?)
They also sold on there older and larger machines a spindle drive motor
(mainly used for template work and planning cut on spindles.

A few people in OUR group have made there own motors /adapted other motors to
there Legacy's to get the job done. YOU are welcome to search our archives for
this info.

I have given you full access to the group. So feel free to ask or suggest

I saw about a 15-20 second clip from an old promotional video featuring a
“south west blanket chest”, and came up with this. 3” corners, 1 1/2” rope
twist 2 start, 3” pitch. Pretty easy to build.

Apart from the beautiful looks, being cedar it must smell wonderful too.
Perfect for a blanket chest.
