Here's my $0.02 on the clamping matter upon the rotary table. I have
(made) a Longworth chuck and as Bill mentioned it is not a strong holder
nor necessarily a repeatable accurate locator, though it may be close
enough for woodwork. It might be improved with bushings in the slot that
fit better than the 1/4" threaded bolts. I put Tommy bar holes in mine
that help a lot. As Bill mentioned, different "jaws" that do the actual
holding might work better than the rubber feet, e.g. toothed pads, screw
points through the pads, or something aggressive like that. If the scrolls
were in a (stronger) metal plate the angles could be much shallower and act
like the scroll behind a 3 jaw chuck.

Now if you are a fair dinkum engineer with a rotary table linked to the X
axis travel you can cut a suitable ACME scroll in plywood or plastic (nylon
or delrin) plate and in the same setting mill the T slots for the clamp pad
(jaws) in another circular plate. Milling the matching scroll on the jaws
fitted to the T slot might be tricky. Like building a squashed flat 3 jaw
chuck. Clearance is severely limited for a regular 3 jaw metalworking chuck.

I saw a video yesterday of a carving table modified with self centering
clamp jaws that act like the little jeweler's clamp shown, which I also
have. It was basically two blocks opposing each other in a T slot
connected within the oversized slot (below table surface) with a double
ended screw, LH on one end and RH on the other. I have a bunch of them
already threaded (7": LH and 9" RH 3/8-16 x 18" OA or vice versa I don't
remember) and might just try something like that. I made a dozen very large
hand screws and messed up the threading locations, but the threads are
fine. Pay shipping and one or more could be yours. I think there are 12.

My first plan for locating was cross hairs and concentric circles, all cut
with a tiny vee bit. I've found as Tim mentioned that double stick tape is
sketchy, both for locating and holding security, though I got by with it
machining the plastic quilting template for wife (mentioned earlier). Then
I lusted after T slots and hold downs like on my metal working equipment.
I have a giant indexing head with tilting 3 jaw chuck, but it's out of the
question to use on (or near) the REVO. If push comes to shove, I'll just
move the operation to the metal mill! But now that I've remembered these
threaded rods laying in the "resource bin", I just might tinker with a self
centering pad jaw setup. Combined with T slot clamps might be all one
needs.
DanK
P.S. Thanks for the additional Austrailian vocabulary. I'm building a
small dictionary.....
