hey guys!... to begin, I have been out of contact for a while(but still
reading all of your posts) because of the passing of my brother, work has
been challenging lately and I stupidly have been not understanding some
settings on my computer which did not allow me to see the "comment" and
"reply" icons for the group... all is in the past and I figured out the
computer, so I am back!... I want to make a statement regarding the Legacy
Company and their manual mills made in the past... to my knowledge, there
were only a few companies making what we in the group would call an
"ornamental mill", over the past 30, +/-, years... Legacy, Killinger, Vega
and Sears(not counting some exotic, hydraulic, highly industrial copy
lathes)... and I have owned and used them all... we all know the Sears unit
and basically it is a toy and not to be given any serious consideration...
Vega sold a twisting accessory that was only for twisting on spindles and
had very limited use... it had to be used with their duplicator... it was
not practical... Killinger wasn't a bad unit( I purchased three machines
and proceeded to cut, weld and machine the three together to make a 12 ft.
Frankenstein monster... got the jobs done that I needed but what a horror
to use!) but like the other two first mentioned, very limited in what it
could do... then comes the Legacy line... I was in contact with Andy
basically when he first started the company... the innovations and
improvements that he and his team came up with over those early years was
incredible... to design, manufacture, market, educate, etc. their product
line was quite the task... and think about how many shows they did and what
it cost to do those woodworking shows!... and by far, they blew the
competition away!... nothing was close to what the Legacy could do... and
yet it still wasn't enough to keep the company viable due to a downturn in
sales... sure, there are about 10 to 20 of us who would love to be able to
buy gears, rails, accessories, etc. when we wanted or needed them, but the
cost factor of manufacturing parts, mass productionof parts(only way to
make it profitable), storage, book keeping, etc., etc. just wasn't a
viable, long term, financial situation for Legacy... not enough interest in
the machine... and in today's world with CNC carving/milling
machinery(getting cheaper and more affordable every day!) and 3D printing
machinery(soon to be in every home!... LOL!), a Legacy machine would be
dead last in sales, if there were any at all... no sales of machines means
no sales of parts or accessories... so for all of the "I wish I could buy
the Evo machine today" guys, we all had our chance... we just didn't act on
it... and if it was available today, for let's say $4,000, how many would
step up to buy it?... if you find one, and you have to have it, but the
owner doesn't really want to sell it, "make him an offer he can't refuse"
and put it in your "collection" of Legacy machines... perhaps one day it
will reach "Holtzapffel" status!... and if you think there are issues
finding parts and accessories for Legacy machines, go have a conversation
with the Holtzapffel guys!... LOL!... we all have our machines and all I
can say is thanks to the Legacy team(and specifically Andy) for making a
very unique piece of equipment... I know I could not have made it better...
rant over!... Joe B.
