Yes, you can turn this feature off. Please make sure you really want to. It
wants to access the Internet not only to check for a new version, but also
to update Legacy News, found under the Legacy Home tab. It also needs to
access the Internet to check if there is a new version or not for you. Even
seasoned Legacy users are frequently opting to leave this feature turned on.
Every firewall I am aware of has a feature where you can "authorize"
Internet usage for a certain site. I think if you authorize Legacy and were
not bothered with the question about accessing the Internet, you would like
it. I like the fact I am able to research a person in my family file
directly from Legacy, and to do that, I need this feature turned on.

Go to the Legacy Home tab, click Options, then click Options (the Options in
the list, not the Options button), and click Internet Options tab. You have
two options. Read about them and decide which is best for you.

I like being able to see Legacy News, it is often filled with suggestions,
such as "Organizing You Paper Files - a Third Approach" which I made notes
of, and there are tips that usually benefit someone.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Internet access

I am still learning to use my downloaded version of Legacy so forgive what
may seem a basic question.

When I start Legacy, it immediately tries to access the internet - a request
my firewall immediately asks me permission for. Why does Legacy access the
internet on starting? I can understand it accessing the web when I use its
internal browser to go somewhere, but on starting there is no special reason
to do so, except maybe for updates. Can I turn this feature off?
