Hello Martha,
Actually this very topic is going to be chapter 15 of my book that I am currently writing on Legacy. It is really easy. If you have the files copied from your PC to a CD, insert the CD into your laptop. After a while, you will get an AutoPlay dialog box that will ask you what you want to do with the files on the CD. One of the options you will see (and it may be at the bottom of the list) is to "Open folder to view files" - click this option. Another dialog box will open and display a listing of all the files on the CD. There are a number of ways you can go about it now - either multiple select all the files or one at a time - and copy them to your desktop. (I'm assuming you know how to copy/paste). You can even drag and drop the files from the dialog box to the desktop. Once you have the files on your desktop, check to make sure that the file attributes are ok. Copying files to a CD can turn the attributes of a file to read-only and can really stump people when they copy them back to their hard drive. To check a file, right click the file on the desktop and from the context menu select Properties. On the General tab at the bottom will be a series of attributes, the names will change from system to system, but in an older system, if you see the word Archive, make sure that it is checked. If you have the new Vista, you may see Read-only in which case you will want it unchecked. You can leave the file where it is on the desktop if you prefer it, or you can move it to another folder on your laptop, that is up to you. If this file is your Legacy family file, when you start Legacy, you will need to File > Open Family File (or Ctrl+O) and select the file from the Open dialog box by navigating to the desktop and selecting the file then click open. If the file is a GEDCOM, then you will have to import this file as a GEDCOM. If you need any more help, just ask. Kind Regards, Mark From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Martha Taylor Sent: Tuesday, 27 February 2007 2:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [LegacyUG] Export/Import I have a new laptop and want to move my files from my old desktop to the laptop. I'm not well versed in computers and know enough to get myself into trouble. I've read the book and looked at the help files and still must be doing something wrong. I made a back up cd of my files on the desktop and understood that I could use it to load into the laptop but can't get it to work. I made a new file with the same name on the laptop. I thought of making a GEDCOM file and looked at the instructions but when I get to the last step it says I will be prompted for a file name (I think I know what that is) but have no idea what the location is. If someone could give me step by step simple directions I would be most grateful, as I said I'm not too up on computers. I really enjoy the Legacy program.
