Hi Heather,
The colour of Unknowns can be set to a different colour from either
Males or Females in Options > Customise - Colours Tab - so you can
make them stand out or blend in in the Child List in Family View
depending on the colour you choose.

I tried a little test case....
You can either - from the Add menu (at top of screen) - select Add
an unlinked person - put in what little info you have, click the (?)
for the sex..... and then link the person you created to the family
afterwards. I noted that for colours of the names etc, and for
placement when you are looking at that person in the parent position
of a family view, that it seems to treat the person as a male - I
didn't do much research on how extensive that is.....
OR
You can click on add Son or add Daughter - and change the sex to (?)....
(If you do add Daughter, then change the sex to (?) - it again is
treated like a male for colours etc)
Hope this helps!
Heather
