But you can use "Mary or Polly" (without the quotes) and either one will be
found in a RootsWeb search.  I haven't been successful in searching on AKA's
there though.  Has anyone else had luck with that?  The "or" solution only
works for given names, however.  My recollection is that I tried it some
years back with varying surname spellings and only got "hits" when entering
both variations including the "or"--not by searching on one or the other.

No it wouldn't. One would have to search for (Polly) and the facility which
Legacy has for using as names the ones in inverted commas would not work
either.
