Hello Legacy Users, I am new to this list but have been a Legacy user for a few years and am trying to become a "better" and more proficient user. I am hoping that some of you experienced researchers could give me a bit of advice and/or a few tips for my specific project. . .
I have become the curator of my g-mothers papers - letters, diaries, receipts, deeds, court papers, etc. Many families probably have a similar situation. What interests me most is the story within the papers. We have found four marriages, four daughters, news clippings of kidnapping, stories of suspected white slavery and drugs when an aunt "disappeared," bitter custody and divorce proceedings. . . just the usual. It seems to me that what I have is more than a family tree problem - although that is present too. I need to find out and document the family relationships, but I also need to figure out who was living where, when, and with whom. I thought I would be doing this by entering sources in Legacy, but now I am thinking that perhaps I need to assemble and evaluate my information, and THEN enter the results into Legacy. Is this correct? In order to organize the letters, I have designed a database template in askSam (freeform database software) for the letters and docs and am starting to transcribe them individually. I estimate that I have 200-300 letters; 100+ photos; and perhaps another 100 misc. pieces of information. AskSam seems to be a strong, flexible program so far. I am enjoying using it. I have also seen a software program called Bygones that looks helpful for organizing data and planning research, however, I do not want to enter the same information multiple times. Does anyone have experience with this program? Or, do most folks use the ToDo list in Legacy for research planning purposes? As you can see, a little knowledge can lead to a lot of questions. Thank you for your patience, and please forgive me if I have gone into too much detail here. I look forward to being a part of this users group.
