I've been reading all the messages about lumping and splitting, but at the risk of sounding stupid, could someone give me an example - perhaps using a specific examples using data from Ancestry.com and/or a US GenWeb site to illustrate exactly what lumping and splitting is, and how these could differ depending on whether the source provides the original image? This has been very confusing to me.
