They didn't leave Legacy per se. They were still in the Legacy picture
folder, just not showing at all in the Picture Center. No problem, I
just overwrote the folder with a backup in case FastStone did something
weird to them. Legacy won't read embedded info from compressed tiff's,
if that's what you mean. In any case, I'm flummoxed. Very odd problem
indeed.

If you lost your pictures in Legacy you either
1) changed their names
2) changed their location
3) saved them as compressed tiff instead of uncompressed. From memory
Legacy can't read compressed tiffs.
I've done it with jpegs and the photos in the RTF are the same size if
they were the same pixel size.
However, I can't reproduce a problem in the PDF or the HTML.

I definitely wouldn't recommend that, having now tried it. I used
FastStone to re-dpi all the pictures, leaving all else the same.
That part worked. However, when I opened Legacy and attempted to
make a descendants report, the whole system froze up like an iceberg
and put up a notice of Error 20002, something to do with bitmap
handle. No bitmaps involved here. All tiff's only. Also none of
these new pictures would show up in the Picture Center for
re-linking, if necessary. Although all the plus signs were still
showing as if there were picture linked, there were no pictures, none
.... gone.

I'm trying to print Descendant reports in pdf or html. They're both
problematic. All my pictures are in .tiff format, not jpg's. I
also tried deleting all the User files I could find and that didn't
help either. I'm going to try resaving all the pics through the dpi
changer as you suggest. Back in awhile...

Hi JLB,
Are you seeing the inconsistency in the Preview/Print/PDF or in the
RTF? It's always been a mystery to me why the photos in an RTF are
of vastly different sizes even though they have the same pixel size
but I only use the RTF option in testing so it's never bothered me
as the picture placement needs adjusting anyway in an RTF.
I can only reproduce your problem in the RTF and I've now
discovered what's happening.
I've discovered that JPGs have hidden within them the original DPI
in the Print Size or Horizontal and Vertical Resolution. This is
separate from the EXIF data that a photo taken with a digital
camera may carry. Change the DPI for the photo and the size it
appears in the RTF changes. Photos cropped from scans have the DPI
I scanned at. Photos taken with my first digital camera are 72x72
DPI. Photos taken with my current digital camera are 180x180 DPI.
This seems to stay with the photo despite cropping to the same
pixel dimensions.
You can batch change the DPI using the free Faststone Image Viewer
Batch Converter - DPI tab. I've never seen it before as I've only
used the Advanced settings for batch resizing the pixel size.
The User file to do with the Descendant Book report is Descend.usr
You can find out easily enough. Change a setting and then take a
look at the date and time stamp on the usr files using My
Computer/Windows Explorer.
Cheers,
Cathy

The 'custom' area only allows inches, not pixels. Nevertheless I
tried that and still get inconsistencies in picture width.
I think what I'm looking for is a User file that I can delete.
Any ideas which one?

The pictures tab of the Decendant Books report options screen has
two different areas to specify picture sizes.
The top one is the display size in the actual book report - it
has options: small, medium, large, and custom picture area.
The bottom of the tab has an option for picture reduction width.
The picture reduction width allows legacy to create smaller
temporary picture files for generating the report (it doesn't
affect the display size in the report). Since you said you were
choosing original size, I think that is the area you are choosing
and it won't affect the display size.
Try choosing a display width in the top - if you specify an width
in the custom picture area then it should give you uniform
picture widths for your report.

Every single picture in my Legacy picture folder is
300 pixels wide, and yet when I print out a descendants book
report with
the "original size" option they show up in varying widths.
How is this
possible?
