I use a "#" at the end of questionable names, as it will sort the name
into the correct place in an alphabetic sort, but is still obvious.

You can also search for any name that "contains" a # to create a list of
questionable items, or to mark all the questionable items as Private so
they don't appear in your charts, reports, or gedcoms unless you
specifically want them..

I also use "#" as an identifier of questionable info in the names of
scanned pictures and documents, since Windows doesn't allow a "?" in file
names, such as HouseOnWhiteSt-1953#.jpg
Here, Windows can search for a file name with a # in it to locate all the
images with questionable info.

I use () to identify people of interest other than the head of household
in naming downloaded census images, such as
WilliamsTL(June)-1920-TN-Tipton.jpg
This sorts with other images for the same family name, but indicates that
the person of interest is not the head.
