It both explains the different image formats and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Make Google your friend. When someone mentions something you don't know about, first do a Google search on it.
Make Wikipedia your friend. If the range of hits on Google is overwhelming add wikipedia to the search terms. Wikipedia isn't always right but it's a great starting point.
