Here's my take on this..
1) get 2 external drives. Download the latest version of Legacy to the hard drives. Intellishare mark you data files. Copy all photos, scanned document files and files etc to the hard drives. Continue to keep the data on the computer, but update to the hard drives. That way, If you are visiting family, you can plug your hard drive into their computer, temporarily install Legacy on their computer and have access to all of your data. Be sure to uninstall the program before you leave.

Before buying anything, check whether your scanner creates temptorary
files during scanning and never deletes them. I've used a Visioneer One
Touch scanner that creates a 25MB or larger temporary file in C:\Documents
and Settings\your-user-id\Local Settings\Temp\OneTouch for each page
scanned - but *never* deletes them. This will rapidly fill a hard drive -
50 scanned pages * 25MB/page = 1.25GB in temp files, plus the size of the
files you named and saved.

Remember that each new version of almost any software needs more disk
space than the previous version - all those great new features add to the
size of the program. Upgrading to Legacy 7 will have some cost in disk
space.

If you're using a desktop PC, then get another hard drive installed.
500GB drives are in the $100US range. If you're not comfortable opening
the case on your PC, have a computer savvy friend do it and buy him/her a
nice lunch.

If you're using a laptop, an external drive is usually the easiest option.
If it's an older laptop with USB 1.X ports (instead of the newer USB
2.0), the external drive will be much slower than the internal drive.
With USB 2.0 ports, you won't see much difference in the speed of the
external drive. However, I would suggest using the external drive for
storing pictures, not the basic Legacy data.

Yesterday, in the midst of scanning multi-page tiff images I drew the
dreaded message -- "you are running out of hard disk space." Obviously, I
have to do something for my image files. I plan to buy a portable hard
disk
to hold scanned images to use with my laptop. My question is. . . if I
want
to link these files to my Legacy individuals, should I put my Legacy files
on the portable drive as well? Or, will it slow things down too much?
Would
I run the application itself from the portable, too; or, leave the app on
my
main C Drive, and just put the data on the portable?

I should say that I am using these images with a database program, and
also
with Clooz.

My current Legacy file is tiny, still in its infancy, and I plan to
migrate
to Version 7 as soon as possible.

Any comments gratefully accepted,
Denise
