Yes, I have some info on them. I know who they were married to, and often the names of the children. Sometimes I have approximate birth and death information. What I was saying is that I don't go looking in the Index for people I don't know about. If Jane was married to John Smith, I'll go to John Smith to add information to Jane. There isn't any reason to go to the index looking for Jane and trying to come up with which one of several is married to John Smith. That, to me, is just more bloodied forehead work. Conversely, if I find a Jane Doe in an index somewhere, there isn't any reason for me to think "Oh, I wonder if she is the Jane I don't have a last name for." Unless, of course, I find in the index Jane Doe married to John Smith. I'll still go to John Smith to add in Jane's surname. I have too much to do to let these MNU women drive me crazy.

Sometimes, even when you don't know a name, you have some info about them. For example, I have some where I know they had 3 kids, but don't know the names. So putting something in the child field is helpful (in that case I've just put in 1 child called "three unknown children" rather than unknown1, unknown2, unknown3) . And if the person had 2 wives, and you only have info on one, I can see a benefit of listing SOMETHING fore the other rather than just leaving it blank.

Personally, I've tried to put SOMETHING in the name fields to give me a hint, but haven't come up with a good standard yet. But just leaving the field blank or just putting in UNKNOWN isn't helpful to me. It drives me crazy when I look at the index. I've generally gone with the "Unknown_married_to_husb" , but like Jeff says, that is long and klutzy.

I just leave it blank. I don't spend time looking in the name list for people I know nothing about, so having people without a surname isn't an issue for me. At the beginning of my research, I did put in "Mary, wife of John Smith", but I have stopped doing that. When looking for marriage records, it's just easier to look from the side that you know the name. If I might be looking at wills, where a woman's married name might be mentioned, I already know which surnames in the region are in my database, and probably have family group sheets in hand.

What is the best way to deal with unknown maiden names?

Using "Unknown", or "???" creates a lot of individuals named "Unknown" without any hint of who they are connected to.

One idea is to enter "???husb" where "husb" is the husband's surname (as an identifying reference point in a name list) but I would like to know how others deal with the problem. One problem with using "???husb" is that someone unfamiliar with the system might mistakenly assume that the maiden name was the same as the husband's surname.

Another possibility might be to use "Unknown_married_to_husb" (again husb stands for the husband's surname) which is long and klutzy and may not be acceptable format in Legacy or GEDCOMs.

Any thoughts?

Jeff
