My thought would be user selectable number of generations. I currently use 5 with 1/2 of my screen. Once could select 6, 8, 10 or 12 depending on need ...

I think 6 is probably enough though. At present the name bars comfortably hold name/surname/dates and, for me, if that information will not fit then having to drag the information to read it would be a bit of a pain. Having said that, I would make it clear that I am quite happy with the page only showing 4, as at present, so it would not be one of my priorities.
