For what it is worth. I use MSN - I made a folder called Legacy under the Folders on MSN. Then I made a rule that messages from LegacyUG were to go to that folder. This has been working with no problem since 2003. Hope this helps, Ann

They view their emails directly at MSN, etc., where you canNOT create a rule. You also cannot create a rule in Outlook unless you transfer your emails from MSN to your own computer. While they are on MSN, etc., rules do not apply. Dennis replied "No." Nina then asked "What is digest form? Should I get it???" Since the (correct) answer was "no", there is no digest for you to get. ;-) A digest, when it is available, is where you receive one email per day (or more often on a busy list) that contains all of the day's posts instead of the usual scenario (that we all have with this list) where each individual post is distributed as it is submitted. It reduces the number of emails you receive when the list has more than one post per day. I personally do not like digests, but I know that many people do and that is their prerogative. With the digest there is a delay in receiving the mail - I like to have the option of reading it as it arrives and don't want to have to wait up to 24 hours (or more, depending on the settings for that list) to find out what is being talked about by my peers on a subject I'm interested in. With the digest there are always issues with replying to it - many people just do not "get" that they need to change the subject line, delete all the other posts except the one they're replying to, and so on. Many of the arguments for preferring a digest - and a solution for when there isn't one - can be simply solved by teaching the subscriber to create a filter or rule in their own mail box that identifies the list mail as it comes in and diverts it to its own folder. This keeps the list mail away from the personal mail, so each can be concentrated on in its own time. It also means that there is no confusion over whether an email has been sent to you personally or to a list. Every list I subscribe to (usually around 40 lists at any given time) is managed by a filter that diverts it away from the Inbox. Some divert the posts to their own folder, a few get lumped together into one folder, depending on what the list is all about and how active it is. For example, the LUG (this list) gets its own folder, but the 20-odd Rootsweb lists that I administer are all very quiet and I put them all into one folder called "Quiet Lists". When the mail comes in, I can see it sitting there waiting (the folder name is boldened and shows the number of unread emails in it) and know it is there for when I am ready to look at it. The mail is deleted after I've read it (and responded if that's what I want to do), so it does not become confused with masses of mail from umpteen lists. If you do not know how to set a filter in your email program, take a look in the Help files for directions. Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express call them rules. I also have some instructions on my personal web site that I wrote for a variety of programs for another list, which can be easily adapted to any list - see http://www.geocities.com/wendy_m_howard/How-to.htm#RuleFilter<http://www.geocities.com/wendy_m_howard/How-to.htm#RuleFilter> Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp<http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp> Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/<http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/> Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp<http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Help.asp> To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp<http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp> Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
