Much as I hate to give in & as much as I'd prefer to slog on to find the
cause of the mystery of pdf's not opening from 'my' Legacy, I have taken
Art's suggestion, backed by Bob & Darlene, and installed Foxit Reader.
It works perfectly! ...and yes, fast!
Thanks very much to everyone who contributed; my understanding of all
things except Adobe Reader has increased monumentally, I know much more
about Legacy & I hope some others have also benefited along the way.
I will leave Adobe Reader on this PC and try things from time to time to
get to the reason why it didn't work for me, and if anyone gets a great
thought please let me know. I'm a bit of a slogger so I'll get there
sometime...... :>) If I succeed you'll be the first to know. :>)
Regards
Tom

With all this discussion of PDF files, I wonder if anyone who uses the free
PDF reader "Foxit" has ever had any any problem with it.
Foxit is my default pdf reader as it is infinitely faster than Adobe and
Adobe is constantly listed by
http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/signup.html as needing an update because of
hackers.
With the speed, safety and never having a problem opening a file, to me it
is a no-brainer. I have not had Adobe Reader on my system for several years.

I meant the path to a PDF file, not to the Reader executable. When I type
C:\Users\Ward\Documents\Genealogy\Legacy Reports\some_file_name.pdf into the
IE address field, IE opens the pdf with Reader embedded in a new IE window.
My point was that if you can:
(1) Cause Adobe Reader to open the PDF by double-clicking on the PDF's
filename in Windows Explorer; and
(2) Cause IE to embed Adobe Reader within an IE window and display the PDF
by entering the filename and path as the browser's URL;
then Legacy should also be able to invoke Reader when you give Legacy the
PDF's filename and valid path.
If (2) does not work, then perhaps there is still a security/rights setting
somewhere that is blocking all programs from opening Reader for that PDF. A
long shot, but another clue.
