I know that I can benefit from someone else's research as a starting point for my own, so I don't want to reinvent the proverbial wheel.

If you are going to take your genealogy studies seriously you really should do your own research and not just rely on someone else's say-so. That's not to say you shouldn't download someone's tree (with their permission, preferably!) and use it as a basis for your own research. If the other person's tree has what look like well-founded and reliable Sources, you might feel it less important to follow everything up, but if there are no Sources or flimsy ones, you'd be well advised to do your own research, but their data will give you a good idea where to start.

Doing your own research is much more fun than have someone else do it all for you and the "professional" way is to start with yourself and work back one generation at a time.
