Thank you Dennis
You are spot-on for interpretation. I had never used Customise on an Import
so I did not realise it's potential. Thanks again for that prompt. Nothing
in Help about that feature?
I have that box open & it offers the tag ALIA to accept or reject & that
would solve 99% of my problem.
However the tag NICK is not mentioned in the Import Items (tags) which is a
mystery. It would have been my choice to Remove that tag as my file does
have a few ALIAs. Surname Odes = Woods (England), & Pogue = Pollock
(Ireland) & these are ALIA(s)'s
Would be nice to know how Legacy deals with NICK & *why it does not show* as
it is definitely being processed to GIVN from my experience.

Your original post said something about the two alt. names being the
same. From this post I am guessing that you mean the incoming GEDCOM
contains a NICK tag and an ALIA tag that have the same values for a
given individual. And I will further assume that the program that
creates the GEDCOM is consistent and always creates both tags when a
person has an alt. name. If so, then on the import into Legacy, why not
use Customize to tell Legacy to ignore either NICK or ALIA? I haven't
tried it since I don't have my hands on a GEDCOM that I can test with.
