If I back up my family file January 20, 25, 31, then again on Feb 1, I consider the backups on Jan 20, 25 & 31 old files, and yes they are zip files. Thanks, so I will not delete any of the except the zip files. Thanks syble

I am still not clear as to what you mean by the "Old Files". If you mean old back-up files ie. your zip files in Legacy\Data, then no problem. Without knowing what they are, I can only advise you not to delete any file that does not have a .zip extension. When I purchased Legacy in 2005 or 06, it installed on E drive, and as I made my backups, they went to "My Documents", but all I had showing was the 2 zip files, one for the actual files which would have been the .fdb file and one for the multimedia. And even before Legacy was adding the date I was manually, so I'd just go to My Documents occasionally and delete the older files, usually leaving the 2 latest. I just booted up the old computer found the 2006 E:Legacy/Data/Family files with all the extensions I didn't know existed: .TC .CB .FG .PPL .RGB. Really lets me know how little I know about Legacy..... When I bought my new Win 7 computer recently, I had problems with Web page creation, turned out to my a conflict with the preinstalled McAfee. All okay after I uninstall it and am using another antivirus software. In answering many questions from you and then from support. I learned a little more about Legacy. In this NEW computer, I only have the one C drive, so Legacy is there. I created new test files etc. trying everything we could to work on the web creation problem,uninstalled/reinstalled etc. I was told the normal/regular/or something place to back up was to the C:Legacy/Data which I started doing, but now when I go to delete the old files, I'm concerned as to what to delete. Which ones to I delete just as file maintenance? Your comment: "I was instructed to back up to C:Legacy/Data" implies two things, not only were they not stored there in the first place, but Legacy wasn't installed on the C:/ Drive as recommended in the installation instructions. Installing elsewhere does mean that Legacy has to be told where you wish virtually every folder/file to be stored. I know, because my Legacy is stored in the Program Files directory. You can back-up to where you wish, although I do back mine up in the Data folder which is in a ~User/Public Documents/Legacy/Data. Please note, I am not suggesting that you should follow what I do. I only have this set up because I run more than one version of Legacy. I do have another version on the C: Drive which is installed as Legacy recommends. Re: Your Questions: 1) I do not understand this question. What other zip files? 2) Use Windows copy function to any directory which suites you 3) Nothing has changed regarding backing up of files nor their storage. I mainly work on my PC, but do like to keep a fairly current copy on my Laptop, I too had gone to the archives and couldn't figure out what to do. In the past I've always backed up to "My Documents", which has 2 neat zip files, but due to some major problems getting a new Windows 7 PC up and going with Legacy, I was instructed to back up to C:Legacy/Data, now I have these multiple files in My Documents and in the Legacy/Data folder. Questions: 1. I don't want multiple copies of files I don't need, I know I can delete the older zip files, but what about the others? 2. I saw another post and someone said we should backup these other files occasionally, how do I back these up? 3. Has this always been like this or is this something new? If you have internet access for both you can use a program called Dropbox – for safety make sure that you open the laptop so that the data will be copied to their server,, and close it before starting the PC, if you have a router then you can network the 2 machines (more complex, depending on the operating systems) – this is not the only way of networking BTW,, or copy the file to a USB stick and then import into your PC – the easiest. Can someone tell me how when you are using 2 computers - 1 laptop and 1 desktop how you make one the masterfile, so that you can use the laptop and then when you come home update the masterfile. So you dont inadvertently loose information on the chnage over. sandy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
