Tony,

The way I see the problem is that many people, like myself, wish to use the
Location field for the Address at which, say the person is born. This
information to appear on charts and reports and to transfer via gedcom from the
Location field.

The only way I can see this happening is if Legacy provide via General Settings
a table substitution. Address for Location and a way to populated and
depopulate each table on the exchange.

There are many problems with this, as in my case the address table is empty and
some people, I am sure use both but not necessarily in the way that leads to
standardisation.

If it works, leave it alone would be my suggestion.

Alan

Subject: [LegacyUG] Consolidated location and address suggestions

In other threads we have had several suggestions for changes to the way
locations and addresses are handled within Legacy. I thought it might be an
idea to made a common thread where all the ideas can be centralised. I'd also
like to throw my own suggestion into the ring.
If all these suggestions become incorporated into Legacy 8 (or Legacy 9
or...) then I believe that the program will be much improved.

So far we have had one person suggesting that locations be tied to a latitude
and longitude, with the ability to show changes over time.

Someone else suggested having more than just long names and short names,
perhaps having several variations which can be used in different circumstances.

A third person suggested having named formats for locations, so you can build
specific formats for specific reports.

None of these are mutually exclusive and all semm useful. Hopefully, my idea
will fit in as well.

I believe that Legacy should include a country table. This would contain, as a
minimum, the country name and the number of defined fields which that country's
locations should contain. It would also probably have a way for the user to
name those fields.

So:

USA, 3, State, County, Town
England, 2, County, Town
Australia, 2, State, Town
New Zealand, 2, Island, Town
etc.

Each user can have different layouts if they wish. Obviously, more than these
fields could be used as now, up to 9. The basic implementation would be easy,
integrating it into the whole of Legacy would not be.

If anyone else wants to throw ideas into this thread, feel free.

If anyone from support wants to take the ideas and massage them into a single,
integrated suggestion that would be great.

Over to everyone else

Tony
