So on my mother's side, with no living male relative in her generation, we are
out of luck? She has a nephew but I wouldn't know him to see him, let alone ask
for a DNA test.

Is there a good link with an easy to understand explanation for DNA testing for
genealogy purposes?

Thanks for the reply!

are, say, three people linked together but not linked to the main tree then you
have one Island of 3 people.

thinking only of tracing your father’s line back through his main line then you
need to have your brother test for his Y-DNA, and as you say, he is your last
chance.

ancestors/descendants, that some keep a separate database or family file for
possible relations; others keep those individuals in "islands"  How do you
create islands in your main database?

be a male in the line. I have one brother left in my line. I don't even know any
male cousins and no uncles are still alive. I have no sons, but two
grandsons. So is my brother our last chance?
