I repeatedly have this problem, or a variation of same.

I just learned that a Mary Springer I have is a daughter of Nathan Springer
and Hannah McDaniel, both of whom I already have & as married to each other.
So I linked Mary Springer to existing Nathan Springer. I was *not* asked
whether I wanted one of his existing spouses to be Mary's mother.

But I did link her to an existing person, namely Hannah McDaniel. I was
told Hannah was already Nathan's husband and I was asked if I wanted to
link her in again. Well, I didn't want to do it *again*, but there was no
option just to *choose* her, so I said "Yes," thinking I could just merge
the two Hannahs.

Now I am showing Nathan with *two* Hannahs (as well as 2 other wives) for
a total of 4 wives. *Both* Hannahs have the same RIN and (I suppose for
that reason) Legacy won't let me merge them.

Both Hannahs have the same children & step-children. The only way I can
tell them apart is that the original Hannah has a marriage date of 1776 and
the 2nd has no marriage info.

Hannah is shown as having 2 husbands, both named Nathaniel Springer, both
with the same RIN..

I tried deleting the Hannah without a marriage date, but all it did was to
change both Hannah McDaniels to Unknown!

So I still have Nathan married 4x -- to 2 Unknowns, one with no marriage
date; one with a marriage date of 1776.

I tried to delete the Unknown w/o a marriage date and was asked if I wanted
to unlink Nathan from his child Mary!!

Why was that relevant?? I would have said "No," but I was not offered that
option!
I could simply choose among "Yes" "Cancel" "Zoom" and "Help." "Help" did
not offer any way to keep Nathan linked to daughter Mary!!! So I chose
"Yes (unlink Nathan from his daughter Mary)."

I now attempted to edit the "Unknown" wife whom he married in 1776 by
clicking on the empty wife screen. The box asking me to choose between
existing person and new person had an option (already checked) to add this
person to the current marriage (fine) so I then clicked "link to an
existing person." But Hannah McDaniel had totally disappeared from my name
list although I had only deleted the Hannah without a marriage date.

Fortunately, I had no information entered for either Hannah except the dom
for the original so I was able to re-enter her name easily enough.
Daughter Mary of course was no longer listed as a child but I was able to
link her back in.

Can someone explain to me why Legacy makes it so hard to link an existing
child to an existing couple? Or tell me how to do it easily?

Thanks!

Pat
