These two Wikipedia articles provide a basis for determining U. S. early
locations:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Colonial_America

How one enters them in Legacy might be determined by the specific
European country controlling the colony at the time.
eg. Plymouth Colony, British North America [1620-1686] or
New Amsterdam, Nieuw-Nederland or New Netherland, Dutch North America
[1625-1664 or 1674 depending upon whether you use the date of British
capture or establishment of colony of New York]

Someone on this list recently suggested using the dates in the location
which I find helpful.

It does seem that someone must have created a list, but I didn't find
one on FamilySearch.
