As both Ron and Cheryl have mentioned, their own personal feelings are that for overall safety, it is better to avoid using some characters that potentially could be misinterpreted.
What some may not understand, is to step back and realize that MAYBE, SOMEDAY your data MAYBE processed thru some program / software that POSSIBLY may have it's own little quirk (That's not a bug, but intentional by that software programmers) There are a lot of IF's and Maybe's, but don't blame the software or the resulting data. Like Cheryl, My own PERSONAL feeling is that I am going to stick to using only abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890_ whenever I create any file name so that, if, by chance, I run my data thru, a software that may misinterpret that data. My own pet peeve is the data where a first name has somehow gotten moved from the given name field into the surname field. I don't know whose software/ gedcom process did that, but there sure was a lot of it years ago. Thank G, I don't see it as often any more. Other listers here should not see this as an argument or attack on the way YOU manage YOUR data, but just as advice to consider.
