Bobby: The file name restrictions are essentially operating system imposed.
Here is a reference for file name characters by operating system - look at the table: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filename If you ever have the need to publish information on the web, many of the web servers are Unix based and have very limited character sets for file names. If you ever send files to other people, then you may have issues using non-standard filename characters for their operating system. It is a very good practice to use the least common denominator for file name characters. The guideline that Ron Ferguson suggested is the correct practice to use when naming files: Use only ABC...XYZabc...XYZ-_ I would not use the period in a generic filename, that can also lead to troubles. You can always be brave and use any of the allowed characters for your specific operating system and you should be ok as long as you stay within that system. If you send files to others, publish on the web, then you need to use the least common denominator filename characters. Good luck. ___ Leon Chapman [email protected] ----- On Tue, Jul 23, 2013 at 2:08 AM, Ron Ferguson <[email protected]>wrote: > Bobby, > > Standard Windows computer practice for absolute safety in the use of file > names is only to use alpha-numeric characters together with underscore and > hyphens as separators - no spaces. > > May I suggest that you abide by recommended procedures. > > Ron Ferguson > http://www.fergys.co.uk/ > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Bobby Johnson > Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 4:44 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [LegacyUG] Apostrophe in Filenames > > I recently decided to clean up my multimedia filenames so that my picture > files > and document files were consistent.
