My strongest recommendation to prevent data loss. Backup, Backup, Backup!

Feel free to experiment, use the Sample file that comes with Legacy for
this if you wish but never make a major change to your own data file
without making a backup first. If you do mess up a change you can
restore from the pre-change backup and start over. Also decide on a plan
for keeping a set of backups not just the most recent. I keep one from
the end of each month in case I find a problem that I did not detect at
the time it happened. With the most recent copy of your file and a set
of backups you can roll back to a point in time when things were OK then
use an export of all the people with changes since that date (you can
create a search list based on the modified date then export the people
in the search list) from your recent file to import the changes into the
restored copy.

Copies of backups should also be in more than one location, some on your
hard drive for immediate access, some on media like CD/DVDs which can be
used if your hard drive or computer fail and some in a remote location
in case a disaster destroys your home. Remote locations include bank
safety deposit boxes, a friend or relative and internet storage such as
SkyDrive or Dropbox.
