Pat,

For what it is worth, the context Help button says:
“Master media items and how many times they have bee linked”

Now I hope that is clear – beats me :-)

Your arguments for maintaining only one major file are convincing. I think
I broke mine into 2 separate files to make it easier keep track of the
pictures. But I guess I don't need to change the way I do that.

Incidentally in the Family File Information box, what precisely does the
term "times linked" refer to?

I have published on my website a tutorial detailing how to separate out the

I keep two separate files with basics for each of my direct lines in both
files, my reason is I have a website and lots of separate links for the
maternal and the paternal lines.

I'm interested in what settings you used to get name, dates and places only
for a ged com to upload for DNA purposes, also which output did you choose.
Thanks,
Syble

Hi Pat,

If I were you, I would consider why you are keeping two separate files, and
do you need to keep doing that?

If you continue with your present setup (ie two separate files plus the
combined one) the only way to keep it all current is to update two files
with each new piece of information. Very tedious, and if you're anything
like me one day you will forget to update the second file and then it's all
out of sync.

Why not just go forward with the new combined file? Then you will only have
to enter data once, you will have only one set of master files (locations,
sources, ...), and life would be much easier for you. And when you discover
that your mother was related to your father in some obscure way (as many of
us do!) you've already got everything in the one file ready to make that
connection.

You may have good reasons for keeping your two sides of the family separate,
which is why I'm saying to think about it, not to just "do what I say". :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy
