It's useful when you don't have solid primary evidence to answer your question. You enter your assertions and from what sources. The final product is a statement documenting your reasoning why you made the decision you did in answering your question usually from non primary evidence. Useful for end of line ancestors, brick walls, questionable relationships, facts etc.

It does take time to enter the data and to analyze it which is the downside. The upside is years from now you have a document that tells you why this choice was made with the documentation supporting it.
