I did it. It doesn't include everything I want. (When I start with the youngest it drops his siblings for instance.) However, I can live with it.
A bigger issue is the process apparently delinks people. I've tried it three exports three different ways (to see what I get) and I always get delinks of several sets of a child in the direct link from his parents. The child and the parents are there, just not linked to each other. (And not the same sets of child/parents in each file so I can't figure out the issue.) They are linked in the original file. It is easy enough to relink them but it makes creating the new file a lot more work. (I said his parents because, so far, it has always been a male line. Probably not relevant.)
