All good advice in this thread. Some extra thoughts based on my merge
projects:

   - After each merge go through the suggested duplicates list and resolve
   everything before you do another merge. And look at all the tabs so that
   you can preserve links to photos, references, notes etc.
   - If the duplicate list is long, you can always stop and exit the
   program. It can be a slow process. When you come back you can resume the
   duplicate resolution process. You can also skip suggestions that need more
   research and clean out the easy ones first, then come back around again.
   - Don't make convenient assumptions when resolving duplicates. I had one
   large family that had two children named Thomas but born in different years
   get flagged as a potential merge. There was no death date on the first
   Thomas, but turns out he died an infant and they reused the Thomas name
   with a later child. It taught me to always check a corroborating source
   like a BDM site and not just assume there was a typo etc.

Overall I do like the way the merge/duplicate resolution process works. The
screens are very helpful. You just need to be patient.
